1200-Year-Old Royal Tomb found in Peru

1200-Year-Old Royal Tomb found in Peru

The 1,200-year-old tomb of a ruler of the pre-Incan Sican culture was found recently in Peru ‘s Lambayaque region, announced Carlos Elera, director of the Las Ventanas archaeological dig.

One of the most interesting objects found is a bottle representing the funerary bundle that it accompanies, also discovered was a gilded copper crown with an attachment of jaguars, a mask with winged eyes, spearpoints and arrowheads, among other artifacts.

Ruins of Sechin Bajo was built 5,500 Years Ago, one of the oldest places built in Americas.

Archaeologists involved in the dig said carbon dating confirms it is one of the oldest structures ever found in the Americas . A team of peruvian and german archaeologists uncovered the plaza on February 2008.

It was hidden beneath another piece of architecture at the ruins known as Sechin Bajo, in Casma, 229 miles (370 km) north of Lima .  Three years later, carbon dating results given by the “Institut für Umweltphysysik der Univesität Heidelberg ” indicates that it was built 5,500 years ago.

Prior to the discovery at Sechin Bajo, archaeologists considered the ancient Peruvian citadel of Caral to be one of the oldest in the Western Hemisphere, at about 5,000 years – along with Mesopotamia, Egypt, China, India and Mesoamerica.

“They had a highly-developed understanding of architecture and construction. This can clearly be seen in the fact that the materials they used survived for so long”, Peter Fuchs, one of the archaeologists, told the “El Comercio” newspaper.  The social gathering space that Fuchs and his colleagues found was built with rocks and adobe bricks.
